I cried like a baby watching this video yesterday. Shane, his family, and friends really touched me. I think what got to me the most is Shane’s wit, sarcasm, and long face, which remind me of my youngest brother’s.

Imagining my brother living in Shane’s position made my heart hurt. But seeing Shane’s attitude and will to embark on this roadtrip share very powerful messages.

Hearing his dad explain his son’s Spinal Muscular Atrophy diagnosis as standing at the edge of an abyss was especially significant. I think people encounter situations every day where they have to decide how they will react: positively or negatively. This video, as well as a shorter version here, really convey what it means to live a positive life in the face of adversity. I immensely admire Shane’s strength, as well as the strength and love of his family.

This is a truly touching video. I urge you, if you feel so inclined, to watch and help Shane achieve his goal. Shane and Soul Pancake would like to raise funds to make a documentary of Shane’s roadtrip. You can read more and donate here and you can check out Shane’s Tumblr blog here.

New.

Feeling inspired and optimistic today. It’s such a good feeling and I think the following may be the cause:

  • Being in Ann Arbor this week: I think I underestimated what a change of scenery and exploring a new place could do for me.
  • My family: I facetimed my parents yesterday and they told me my dog, Maximus, licked the phone when he heard my voice. I felt very loved.
  • Future plans: friends’ graduations, birthday celebrations, camping trips, other trips, new places, and more surfing. Setting new goals.
  • My relationship: Appreciating the sweet and supportive person by my side and letting him know that.
  • Realizing that when I’m older, I will wish I could be exactly where I am right now.

Coachella has been my saving grace this week. Reentering “real life” following a weekend in the desert filled with sunshine, great music, and beautiful, happy people, can be difficult and confusing. Wanting to relive the weekend hasn’t been too overwhelming though, as it’s still pretty vivid in my memory.

Highlights included my first times seeing Two Door Cinema Club and Band of Horses. Two Door has been a favorite of mine since my friday mornings commuting from UCSB to my internship at Planetary Group, where I’d blast “Something Good Can Work” while exiting the 101 at Vine St. Their upbeat, high energy music definitely came across in their performance and I felt enamored dancing to it all.

Band of Horses has also been a favorite of mine since my college days. Seeing them live was so so beautiful. That’s all I can really say. And I can’t wait to experience their beauty again at Outside Lands in August.

Other highlights included Vampire Weekend and The Postal Service. Vampire Weekend never ceases to bring the energy and they reaffirmed my memory of them at Coachella ‘10 as the funnest dance party. SO fun! I love them. Postal Service was lovely and I continuously caught myself trying to get a glimpse of Jenny Lewis longer than a few seconds to see how she moved when she sang. I love them so much. My only complaint was that I could not listen to them longer!

Tegan and Sara was a set that I’d been looking forward to as I had been obsessed (JK, still am) with their single, ‘Closer.’ Completely sleep deprived, Friday actually seemed like a really long day and Tegan and Sara being at the end of it, I could only hope I wouldn’t fall asleep on the ground before hearing the single. John and I had given up and started sleep walking back to our campsite when I came to, declaring, “I spent four hundred something dollars to be here, I’m going to hear ‘Closer’” and walked back to the stage. At that moment ‘Closer’ started playing and I was so happy to hear it.

The weekend inevitably came to a close with RHCP, and a sandstorm. I enjoyed RHCP very much, but it was a little hard for me to discern my feelings about a band that I’d wanted to see so badly since jr. high. I couldn’t help that my expectations were that their performance would blow my mind. They were the main reason I’d bought my ticket in the first place and I’d already enjoyed the weekend so much. I will say they are very entertaining and their music has made them the legends they are. I was so happy they played ‘Higher Ground’ live and the few bars of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Beast of Burden’ made me cry out, “It’s so beautiful!” to the girl next to me.

Coachella 2013 renewed my faith in the festival and I am so happy I went and loved every bit of it. I also road the iconic ferris wheel, which I was so stoked about.

Coachella, you da bessst. Thanks for a fantastic weekend!

“You are more beautiful than you think”

The Outside Lands 2013 lineup is out!
I have to admit, I wish there was a little more variety from some of the big names at Coachella.
I’m stoked to see RHCP, Band of Horses, Vampire Weekend, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs again. Also, I think it’d be rad if Karen O and Trent Reznor sang Immigrant Song live.
The lineup seems pretty short so I am looking forward to seeing who they add.
